Crowding

crowding of the teeth beforeBefore
crowding of the teeth afterAfter

There is insufficient space for the teeth to properly align in the arch. Crowding may be manifested by teeth overlapping, over-erupting, and/or flaring. Crowding makes it more difficult to maintain good oral hygiene, increasing the incidence of cavities, and reduces bone support for the teeth, increasing the likelihood of developing bone loss or periodontal disease. Crowding is the most common orthodontic issue.

Spacing

Gaps between the teeth due to missing teeth, small teeth, or larger jaw condition. Gaps tend to promote food impaction between teeth when chewing.

Overjet

The top front teeth are further forward than the lower front teeth. This is usually caused by the lower jaw being shorter than normal, but it may also be caused by excessive flaring of the top front teeth or a combination of both.

Overbite

The top front teeth excessively overlap the bottom front teeth. This condition is either caused by the over eruption of the top front teeth or bottom front teeth or both, usually due to the lower jaw not growing proportionally to the upper jaw.

Underbite

The bottom front teeth are in front of the top front teeth, usually as a result of the bottom jaw growing more forward than normal.

Open Bite

When the back teeth are brought together, the front teeth do not come together. In fact, there is a gap between the top and bottom front teeth, affecting one’s ability to effectively bite into food.

Crossbite

A situation in which top teeth are overlapped by the bottom teeth. This may involve two teeth or several. Crossbites are a result of teeth erupting in the wrong position or due to a more narrow than normal upper arch. The narrow arch could be a result of genetics or a prolonged thumb sucking habit.

Flared Teeth

Teeth that are flared forward usually are due to an oral habit or trauma. Thumb sucking or tongue thrust habits readily cause teeth to flare.

Impacted Teeth

phase 1 before

Teeth that do not erupt on their own, either due to crowding, retained baby tooth or teeth, or the impacted permanent tooth is not erupting in the proper direction.
